Beyond the Classroom: Stories of Change and Compassion in the Diploma Programme

Community service within CAS at the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme became a meaningful journey of empathy, action, and connection for DP1 students this year. What began as small steps soon unfolded into a series of powerful experiences, each building on the last and shaping a deeper understanding of service and responsibility.

The journey opened with a unique Hindi Diwas experience, where students learned the art of Kolhapuri chappal-making from skilled artisans. This hands-on workshop not only celebrated India’s rich cultural heritage but also sparked curiosity, respect for craftsmanship, and an appreciation for the stories behind traditional skills.

Carrying this sense of awareness forward, students visited the National Association for the Blind in Mumbai. Exploring Braille proofreading, the Talking Book Studio, and learning about the organisation’s inspiring work left a lasting impact. Motivated to contribute, students organised a series of fundraisers, including gaming stations, Fiesta stalls, and bake sales, raising ₹20,461 to support NAB students. They also extended their efforts globally through a crowdfunding campaign for Action Against Hunger, raising ₹52,051 for nutrition initiatives.

This growing sense of service deepened during a village visit as part of their Annual adventure trip. Immersed in rural life, students connected closely with the local community in Goa, preparing traditional foods like patoli and modak and while learning about daily livelihoods. Their experience became even more meaningful as they built a small check dam, participated in tree plantation, and designed simple drip irrigation systems using recycled materials, gaining firsthand insight into sustainability, teamwork, and environmental responsibility.

Back in school, this spirit of action continued through a student-led book collection drive for Sangamitra Sewa Foundation, where nearly 500 books were gathered for young readers. The initiative reflected strong collaboration and a commitment to promoting literacy and access to resources. Alongside this, students led awareness drives by sharing weekly news and marking UN days such as World Wildlife Day, World Music Day, Earth Day, National Science Day, and International Mother Language Day. These efforts encouraged informative discussions, built global awareness, and fostered a more responsible and engaged school community.

This year’s journey culminated on Earth Day, as students created a butterfly garden on campus, supporting biodiversity and showcasing their commitment to sustainable action. This initiative reflected their growing environmental awareness and sense of responsibility.

Together, these experiences transformed CAS into more than a requirement; it became a journey of compassion, collaboration, and meaningful impact, preparing students to engage thoughtfully, act responsibly, and contribute positively to the world around them.
